Medicare & Referrals

Psychology Fees

Psychology fees are set by each clinical practitioner, and the fee varies between practicioners. For current fees, please contact the Williamsroad reception or your clinician.

Standard therapy sessions are 50 minutes long. Your clinician may recommend longer or shorter sessions under certain circumstances.

Medicare Rebates

All psychologists at Williamsroad Family Therapy Centre are registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and have Medicare provider numbers, enabling you to claim a Medicare rebate for counselling sessions.

To claim these rebates, you must have a referral, in the form of a Mental Health Care Plan, from your GP, psychiatrist or paediatrician.

You may go to more than 10 sessions in a calendar year, but Medicare will not provide rebates for additional sessions.

GP Referrals

A referral from a doctor is not a requirement to see a psychologist at Williamsroad.
A referral is required for you to receive a Medicare rebate for your sessions at Williamsroad.
You must obtain your GP referral prior to your first appointment in order to receive Medicare rebates.

To get a referral, you will need to make an appointment with your GP, psychiatrist or paediatrician. The referring doctor will also prepare a Mental Health Plan. It is important to tell the doctor's receptionist that you are requesting a referral to a psychologist as the GP needs approximately 30 minutes to discuss the plan with you and fill in the required paperwork.

A typical mental health plan provides for 8 psychology sessions, after which your referring doctor will assess your progress, and then potentially recommend 2 more sessions. Medicare rebates can be claimed for up to 10 psychology sessions in a calendar year. This includes any other psychological services provided either by other psychologists, or by other eligible social workers or occupational therapists (FPS items), or by GPs (FPS items).

Reports and Assessments

Psychological and court reports and assessments are available from our clinic at a cost. For more information please contact the Williamsroad reception or your clinician.

Cancellation Policy

If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please provide at least 48 hours notice. Cancellations after this time may incur a charge.

If an appointment with one of our busy Clinical Psychologists is cancelled with late notice, it is unlikely this gap will be filled. Late cancellations cause our psychologists to lose income, and other clients needing psychological treatment to lose an opportunity for an appointment.
